Energy efficiency is the new black, it would seem. If Google had a black screen, according to calculations, 750 megawatt hours per year would be saved. The average UK household uses around 18 megawatt hours per year.So Heap Media – a company dedicated to developing online services with a global reach – have used Google technology to make Blackle.
It has exactly the same functions as the white version, but with much lower energy consumption.
An all white webpage uses 74 watts to display, whereas a black equivolent uses only 59 watts.
With roughly 200 million queries a day worldwide, it all adds up.

Should I be feeling guilty my pages are all white?

I didn't know that about white pages. My Vox pag is black, so imagine all the power saved when the 2 or 3 views of it happen each day:-)
Oh man, that's good - I think I don't do merely enough for my environment. I posted about my black out the other day - it's insane how much we (or I) rely on technology to keep myself occupied (or alive).
And indeed, I am tempted to change my page to black. But then
1. No one comes here to read this blog anyway
2. If I change, I think I get all messed up in the head - so used to one thing that a change just messed it all up!
